The Window Replacement Process: What Does it Look Like?

There are many reasons why you may be considering window replacement in Boston. Perhaps it’s been a few decades since you replaced them, or maybe you’re facing a home remodeling project. Maybe your energy bills have been spiking and you’re not sure why. Your old windows could be to blame.

In fact, Energy.gov says heat gain and heat loss through windows can account for up to 30 percent of residential heating and cooling energy use.

Whatever your reason for wanting an update, you may wonder what the window replacement process will entail. Choosing a window installer you can trust is key.

From the first phone call to the finished project, here’s a step-by-step guide on what to expect throughout the process when you partner with JB Sash & Door, your local Marvin window experts.

Step by Step: What to Expect From Us

Once you have contacted us by filling out the online form or giving us a call, you will be contacted by a window replacement process specialist like Andrew Clark, who can put you at ease and walk you through the process. After your initial phone call, we will schedule an in-home consultation. Here’s a look at what to expect.

1. In-home consultation

Whether you’re looking to preserve the look of your home or transform it, the goal of the in-house consultation is to help us determine your home’s needs and your goals for the window replacement project. The consultation only takes 60-90 minutes of your time.

We start the consultation with a walk-through of your home so that we can get a sense of which windows need replacing. We will take measurements of each window, as not all window openings are the same (even if they look alike). Equally important, we also check the condition of each window and opening. This will help the window specialist determine the type of replacement window they will recommend insert vs. full-frame windows for your project.

2. Review Options

Once we have taken measurements, we will sit down with you to go over your options and recommend the best product for your needs and budget. We will go over different window designs, materials, and colors, as well as budget ranges, different installation methods, and personalization options, such as grid patterns, hardware, and half-screen vs. full-screen.

If you prefer to see, touch, feel, and compare window types and styles, we invite you to visit our Marvin showroom for an extensive selection where you can explore options within a home-like setting.

We will also discuss building code requirements such as minimum sizes and safety glass requirements for windows in certain locations. For example, we will recommend tempered glass in bathrooms, stairwells, and other high-fall-risk areas.

Tempered glass does not shatter into shards on impact but rather it crumbles into smaller pieces that interlock with each other for stronger, less dangerous consequences. Glass that must be tempered for code includes glass on windows less than 17 inches from finished floors, or in bathrooms where the window is located 60 inches from the nearest drain.

3. Free, no-obligation quote

After the preliminary in-home consultation, the replacement specialist will provide a free, no-obligation quote.  If you’re not ready just yet to make a commitment, our pricing stands for 30 days.

Once you’re ready to move forward, we will schedule an installer review. This is when we come back out to the home to take a second set of measurements to confirm the first. We don’t leave anything up to chance. That’s because your windows are made to order so we want to get things right the first time. We will make any adjustments that need to be made at this point.

4. Place order and schedule your window installation

Congratulations, now you can sit back and relax as your windows are being made. Your window rep will notify you when your windows are ready and schedule a convenient time for our certified installers to install them.

5. Prep for your window installers

There are a few things you can do to prepare your home prior to the window installation process. This helps your installers by reducing obstacles and barriers to productivity, while saving time and resources. Here’s what you can do:

  • Move furniture about four feet away from the walls where the windows are located.
  • Remove interior shutters or blinds but leave brackets.
  • Remove anything fragile from the immediate area.

That’s it: your Marvin window installers in Chelsea will do the rest! They will lay down drop cloths on the floor and tarps on the furniture for protection. After the project, they will ensure the area is cleaned up properly. However, unlike other types of home improvement projects, window replacement is a relatively clean and quiet process that isn’t as disruptive to homeowners. In fact, you can remain in the home while the replacement is going on, with minimal disruption to your daily life.

We will follow up after the installation to see how you’re liking your new windows. We will send out a final packet which will contain helpful information for you regarding use and care, as well as warranties. We give you industry-leading warranties on our products, including a two-year warranty on labor on top of Marvin’s product warranties.

When is the Best Time to Begin the Window Installation Process?

There’s never a bad time to schedule a window installation project. It makes no difference to the installers. Many homeowners worry about installing windows in the winter because they assume they will be left with gaping holes in the walls for hours on end, where heat can escape. Not so.

We don’t pull out all your windows at once. We tackle one room at a time, with only about five to 10 minutes of exposure for each window. Usually, a two-person crew is assigned to most jobs, and on average, they can replace between eight and ten windows per day.

Why Choose JB Sash & Door as Your Marvin Certified Installation Provider?

It can be daunting to choose a window installation provider that you can trust. There are many companies out there, and they all promise the same thing. But our Marvin-certified installation professionals go above and beyond to ensure the window replacement process is as seamless and as enjoyable as possible.

With us, you can rest assured we won’t be using any high-pressure sales tactics to get you to sign up on the spot like other companies will. In fact, we never ask for a commitment on initial consultation. As stated above, we take the time to price out the project and email you a quote for you to review, ask questions, and then sign when you’re ready.

We install all products according to the manufacturer’s specifications, giving you peace of mind knowing our trained installers give the same attention to detail and expertise to every project across the board. As Marvin-certified installers, we undergo consistent training on the latest products and installation techniques.

We offer a higher level of product knowledge than general contractors, who only know the basics and usually only offer one type of standard window. They don’t have the resources to know the details of each line and which would be best for your home.
